Power Quality
as a Service
Harness advanced grid sensors, AI-driven analytics, and expert utility data scientists to prevent costly power quality issues.
- Transients: Detect sudden, short-duration voltage increases that can damage sensitive equipment.
- Voltage Sags: Identify short-term voltage reductions causing malfunctions and data loss.
- Harmonic Distortions: Spot waveform deviations leading to equipment overheating and communication interference.
- Unplanned Loads: Track unexpected loads that overburden transformers, ensuring capacity visibility and advanced warnings.
PQaaS is a monitoring service provided to both utilities and commercial and industrial customers through our team of utility and data science experts. The service includes our UbiGrid Distribution Transformer Monitor (DTM+), installed on transformers (usually 3-phase) serving business customers, and the UbiVu Intelligent Asset Management platform using machine learning to deliver advanced analytics. Utilities are responsible for installing the UbiGrid DTM+ units.
Ubicquia provides monitoring services through its network operations center. Through UbiVu, utilities and customers have access to all the data collected, with selected views determined by the utility.
The service is billed monthly to the utility per transformer and monitored using one of two service tiers: Standard or Premium. The utility can, in turn, bill their customers. Ubicquia can support co-branding with utilities through their major accounts or energy services teams. There is no upfront hardware purchase for the utility or the business customer. The utility is responsible for installing UbiGrid DTM+ units on transformers to service their business customers.
The UbiGrid DTM+ monitors primary and secondary current, secondary voltage, and transformer health and performance. This enables a comprehensive view upstream to feeders and the substation and downstream for an accurate view of customer load and comprehensive transformer health data.
This three-pronged capability helps utilities distinguish grid events such as momentaries, sags, and faults that can impact the customer from voltage sags, drops, and transformer overloading caused by issues on the customer side.
You can. Ubicquia’s PQaaS augments meter data and makes it easier to pinpoint power quality issues. Where meters have 15-minute intervals, PQaaS uses two-minute intervals and a sampling rate of 130 samples per cycle or 7,800 per second to provide timely alerts using thresholds established by the utility.
Unlike traditional PQ meters, PQaaS does not require physically installing and removing them to investigate concerns or conduct an engineering analysis based on data pulled from a database. Instead, it delivers AI-enabled insights in real-time.
PQaaS also enables utilities and customers to locate the causes of poor power quality. Through application programming interfaces (APIs), meter data and other data collection tools can be used with PQaaS to build a comprehensive power quality profile for business customers. The PQaaS open platform enables integration with other utility applications.
Yes, they can work directly with Ubicquia to purchase the service. This works well for customers who buy their power or own their transformers.
Customers who buy power at the meter must work with their utility to obtain permission to access transformers and install the UbiGrid DTM+ units.
Of course. Utilities may purchase UbiGrid DTM+ units, including UbiVu and ten years of software as a service (SaaS), and provide their business customers with accurate power quality monitoring and improve their own asset management and grid reliability.
The utility can also provide subpanels and a subset of data or all the data and alerting to their customers. Utilities can also brand a PQaaS solution for their customers using Ubicquia’s white-label platform.
Note that the utility will receive more data than its customers (transformer health and upstream information), which can improve reliability using our predictive AI platform.
